Plano Kiwanis’ “Books and Buddies” initiative, at its heart, is about providing bi-lingual books for local young kids. This grant along with Plano Kiwanis funds will be used to purchase more bi-lingual books to be given to Head Start children at their Open House planned in February.

Within the past two years, Books and Buddies supplied bi-lingual books for school events, after school programs and libraries. Some medical offices received bi-lingual books where parents can take a few quiet minutes to read books with their child. The goal of this initiative is supporting the efforts of connecting the parent and child with books. Kelley said, “Without everyone supporting reading, then books are just an unused tool waiting for the hand to embrace it.” For more information go to www.facebook.com/kiwanisplano

The Local Community Grants are awarded through an open application process and provide funding directly from Walmart and Sam’s Club facilities to local organizations in the U.S. Search “Walmart Local Community Grants” for more information.
